Bonobos are a rare and endangered species with fewer than 250 in captivity worldwide. In the wild, they are found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The greatest threat to a wild bonobo is poaching. Adult animals are killed and infants are then seized for sale in the pet trade. One of our goals at Ape Initiative is to be diligent in discouraging the use of images that promote bonobos, and other wildlife, as pets. The conservation of these species depends on all of us!
